Lesley's Requirements for Free Motion Quilting Autumn 2016

Free Motion Quilting

A lot of quilters feel uncomfortable, even scared of free motion quilting. My aim is to give you a series of activities that will make you feel more at ease and increase your confidence.

What do you need to bring to the class?

NB Please read carefully - you will need ALL the items

Sewing Machine - in good working order - MUST be able to drop the feed dogs

Plus  - a free motion foot/darning foot   -you may have to purchase one as they are not standard on some machines

Plus  - the manual for your machine

                           all leads and attachments

Machine needles - Microtex, quilting or universal  size 70 or 80 to suit your machine

Threads  - an assortment to try out - cotton, rayon, polyester, bottom line, plain or variegated

It is best not to bring old inherited  threads  - as they may be weak.

Fabrics -

½ m of a large scale print - with easy shapes - flowers ideal

    Plus a toning thread

Plus a 20” square of wadding - cotton or  80/20    - this can be made into a cushion !

2 fat quarters - with wadding to make a sandwich - plain is fine

This is for stitch pattern practice

1 fat quarter - with wadding

Plus a selection of smaller fabric pieces for applique  - maybe a flower

A few small test fabric and wadding sandwiches - to test stitching - 9” square - your leftovers!   - no need to tack your sandwiches

N.B. re wadding  - best to use cotton or 80/20 for the class
