Class requirements for Val Log Cabin quilt

Quilt in a Day Log Cabin with Val

Sat 18th Feb      10am-5pm

All Saints Church, Weston Green, Esher KT10 8JL

Please remember to bring a packed lunch

This is a delightful quilt that, with modern cutting and piecing methods, is quick and easy to make; if you are a complete patchwork beginner, this is perfect for you as you will get to learn about rotary cutting as well as quick piecing, and even those who have some patchwork experience will enjoy being introduced to the fast piecing method.

As well as fabric please try and bring the following items with you:

Sewing machine and all it’s bits (like machine foot/lead etc) and if you haven’t used it before maybe it’s manual

Sewing thread for piecing your quilt – neutral colour works best – greys or creams.

Pins

Thread snips/scissors

Quick unpick (just in case you get it wrong)

Pencil and paper – to make notes

Rotary cutting equipment – ruler/board and cutter (but if you don’t have these then we will have some class ones for you to try)

Cushion is sometimes handy

And if you are already a sewer, please bring along anything else you usually use.

Fabrics: if you are a complete beginner you may wish to avoid using stripes and plaids and other one-way designs.  If you want a scrappy look quilt then we will need to take some time sorting this probably prior to the class.

A traditional setting of log cabin would have a central colour (often red) and then 3 colours either side – one side we would call light and the other dark but they don’t necessarily have to be in the same colour family;  they  could just be a change of colour

You can use the same fabric for all three strips of light (or dark) and sometimes that works really well as it produces a really dramatic effect, but isn’t quite so interesting to sew,

Otherwise, please bring along sufficient fabric for the size of quilt you plan to make.

The quantities have assumed you are a beginner and therefore are reasonably generous! And are calculated on fabric that is 42” (112cm) wide.
