Skill Levels explained

Categories: A = anyone and includes patchwork virgins

                                    V =  someone with no patchwork experience

                        B = someone with some patchwork knowledge, including rotary cutting skills and ¼” seam allowance mastered

                        ADV B = someone with good patchwork skills

 

Reminder: - The class fee is due at the time of booking

Sewing Machines are available to hire

 

Patchwork/Needlework does require time and patience. It is unlikely you will always finish the project during the class and you will be given all the necessary instructions to complete it at home (Open Format and Follow on classes are also available).

We will assume that you have read and approved our T&C when booking you a class.

If you would like to book a place on a class…

1)           Contact the shop (phone 0208 941 7075)

2)           We can not guarantee your space unless you pay for your place – bookings receive without payment will be put on waiting list and transferred to actual list once paid for.

3)           Should you wish to cancel and providing you give us a 7 day notice before the class, we will issue a CREDIT NOTE. It can be used against goods or class – no time limit on it.

However, if you do not give us a 7 day notice, we will NOT BE ABLE to offer a credit note as we would have confirmed the tutor and committed to pay her fee. We will be happy for you to find someone to take your place but we cannot take responsibility to find someone for you. We will of course consider any medical emergencies and serious family situations.

4)           Should WE cancel a class, a cash refund will be given

We will assume T&C have been read and agreed when you book on a class.

 

We have 6 Janome machines (DXL 603) for students to hire during classes.

The rental fee is only £4.00 per machine (for ½ or full day).

The machines are available on a first come, first serve basis.

 

 

Sewing machine and equipment

We kindly ask you to take your own equipment upstairs, so please make sure that you only bring items that you can carry to our 1st floor room.

If your sewing machine is too heavy for you to take upstairs, we strongly recommend hiring one of ours. The cost of this for the day is £4.00.

Get to Know your Sewing Machine with Collette

 

This is the opportunity to understand fully your sewing machine and what all the feet and dials are for. Collette will guide you so that you can finally get the most out of your machine and stop being scared of it! Please let us know the make and model of your machine at the time of booking. You will be making samples using all the stitches available on your machine, as well as learning how to clean and oil it.

Crazy Patchwork with Gail - Level A

 

Gail will show you how to create the cushion front, and discuss the embellishment options, this can be completed afterwards at home. Gail will run through the assembly of the cushion and offer the options for the back. You will be given a full set of instructions to take home to complete the project.

Super Handy Mat Bag with pocket with Collette – Level A

Come and spend a day making this useful bag to carry all your cutting equipment, the bag has been designed to use a jelly roll (precut 2.5” strip). You will learn how to construct the bag with an external pocket for your ruler and a handy pocket inside to hold your rotary cutter.

Drunkard’s Path with Sue Thornborough (Curved piecing - not for Patchwork virgins!)

 

Drunkard's Path is a highly versatile block that can be arranged in hundreds of different ways.  Take your skills to the next level by mastering the art of curved piecing.  And then have more fun arranging your blocks in a unique way!

English Paper Piecing for Beginners/Improvers with Valerie – Level A

Whether you are familiar with EPP or an absolute beginner, this class is the perfect environment to carry on an existing project or start a new one under Valerie’s guidance. She can suggest design options and will give you lots of technical hints and tips.

Back to Basics with Collette – All level

This is the perfect class for complete beginner wanting to learn how to use all the tools correctly. This is ALSO the perfect class for anyone who has been quilting for some time and wants to improve their technique. Every quilter will benefit from attending this class.

Fun with Triangles with Gail – All level

Not sure how to use those fabrics with bold stripes? Then come along and enjoy a day working with striped fabric. We will be making a table topper on the day, along with instructions for a table runner and place mats, and even suggestions for quilts.

Beginner’s Hand Embroidery Project with Kate Barlow – Beginner/Rusty Stitchers

Whether you are a new stitcher or just a bit rusty, this lovely hand embroidered toadstool is the perfect project to improve your hand sewing skills. You will learn some simple embroidery stitching including chain stitch, French knots, seeding, stem stitch and fly stitch. The design would make a lovely cushion or addition to a quilt block. Regardless of your level, you will always learn something from RSN trained Kate!

Luna Lapin (by hand) and Luna’s Accessories (machine required) with Collette – Level A

Collette has fallen in love with this adorable rabbit toy and wants to share it with you!! During the class you will work on making the toy (by hand). The book includes a lot of clothes and accessories as well. I think we might end up with a Luna Lapin fan club and carry on having fun with this gorgeous critter!!

OR… if you have already made Luna and want to make one of the clothes or accessories from the book, then this is the class for you!

Antique Tile Quilt with Sue Thornborough

A traditional block made in a non-traditional manner.  This easy block can be achieved by using the 'disappearing' method.  Intrigued?  Come along and find out for yourself.  A quick and easy block that should leave you with a finished quilt top in a day.

Absolute Beginner Patchwork Quilt with Collette – Level A

This class is designed for patchwork beginners to learn the skills and techniques to make a quilt top. You will learn how to accurately prepare, measure and cut fabrics for your finished projects. The quilt is called 4 Patch and Friends and can of course be made in completely different colours from ours!

Hand Embroidery with Kate (Easter Theme but not compulsory!) – Level A

Kate will be showing you how to use ribbons, felt, beads, and embellishments to create a lovely Spring/Easter hoop decoration. This is a great class for complete embroidery beginner as well as anyone who falls in love with this gorgeous project. Regardless of your level, you will always learn something from RSN trained Kate!

Twist and Turn Bargello with Sue Thornborough (not for beginners)

Not as hard as it looks, twist and turn bargello gives you a fabulous result from a technique that involves strip piecing and cross cutting the strips to create a pattern that flows and twists across your quilt.  You will be asked to complete your strip piecing before coming to class to enable you to begin work on the cross cutting.  During the class you will learn how to work from a chart and will complete several of the columns, gaining enough knowledge and experience to finish the quilt top at home

Japanese fabric folded bag with Gail. Level A

Spend a fun and relaxing day hand sewing. Learn a new technique of Japanese fabric folding or just build on your previous skills. You will receive a full pattern to enable you to make the item again and finish what you’ve started at home, suitable for all skill levels.

Folded star Cushion with Gail – Level A

Come and discover what all the fuss is about by spending a relaxing day discovering the art of folded stars. During the class we will make the stars for the cushion; a full instruction sheet will be given to finish the cushion at home. You will also discuss and explore other uses for the star learning how versatile this technique is. Suitable for all levels. Sewing machine required.

Collette’s Quilt Along

Open to all levels 

Similar in format to Val’s Open Format (but with Collette!), these sessions will run for 3 hours. This is the perfect class for those of you who can’t commit to our 6 hour classes. Collette will be on hand to help you with your project, whether you started it with her or not. If you need a guiding hand to start something, please let us know!

“Me Sewing Time” at the shop

We know that life (and the rest!) can sometimes get in the way of sewing! So we are offering you to come and spend some time in our class room, where you will get either 3 or 6 hours of uninterrupted sewing (and we will do tea and coffee and biscuits too!!). If you just want to get on with a project or start something new, without needing a teacher just some space and time, this is the spot for you!!

You have a choice of times: 10.30am til 1.30 or 1.30pm til 4.30 pm (or both!!)

£15.00 for 3 hours or £25.00 for 6

Do you want some “me-sewing-time”? Want to finish a project and never find the time to do it at home? Can’t commit to an all-day class? Then these evening sessions are perfect for you!  

Val will be on hand to guide you through your project and the shop remains open during that time!

Val has been teaching patchwork for many years and what she doesn’t know about that subject isn’t worth knowing! She will be on hand to guide through your own project or help you choose your new one!

Please let us know what you will be working on at the time of booking. All levels welcome, relaxed and friendly atmosphere!

Sewing machines are available to rent for £4.00 per class; (they are Janome DXL603). Cutting mat, rulers and cutters can be borrowed on a first come, first served basis.

Free Motion for the Beginners and the Terrified with Paula Doyle at Our Lady of Lourdes, KT7 0LP

This class is a rescheduled class from last term, hence we have kept it at the same price and given priority booking to the students who were booked on the original class.

Too many quilt tops waiting in the “to be quilted” pile? Not sure where to begin? Come along to this class to get to grips with how to use your sewing machine to do beautiful free motion machine quilting ! In just one day you will learn all of the basics of FMQ while making a lovely calico cushion cover. Lots of tips, techniques, and tools for stress free quilting are provided during the workshop.

You have the option of purchasing a kit for this class (£12.00). This will save you having to prepare and baste wadding and calico. You will still need to download the class requirements to know what else to bring on the day.

If you do not wish to purchase the kit, make sure you follow the class requirements and come with your sandwich prepared (the teacher will expect you to be ready to start quilting straight away)
